Can you provide a brief background of Harrod Horticultural – how it started and how it’s evolved and adapted?

Harrod UK was established by our founder Ron Harrod in 1954, buying fishing nets from the local herring industry, repairing them and selling them on as garden netting. The business moved into sports netting following requests for football nets and has never looked back, becoming the UK’s leading sports equipment manufacturer supplying goals and equipment to prestigious venues and events across the UK and beyond.

Harrod Horticultural was established in 2000 by Stephanie Harrod, utilising our decades of manufacturing experience to develop innovative and inspirational products for the garden. Since its inception, we have taken great pride in designing and manufacturing products at our site in Suffolk with our product range constantly evolving, the most recent addition being our popular Southwold Furniture Collection launched in 2020.

What is the inspiration/ethos behind the brand?

Stephanie Harrod has always been a keen advocate of organic gardening and encourages people to grow their own fruit and vegetables. The range of products, including raised beds and fruit cages, were designed to get people growing and also to provide inspiration for their outside space. Here at Harrod Horticultural we strive to manufacture high quality gardening products that are practical, look great in the garden and are built to last.

What does Harrod Horticultural represent?

We are proud to be a UK manufacturer and believe Harrod Horticultural produces high quality products that are designed to help customers make the most out of their gardens. We take great pride in the fact that we are able to offer some of the longest guarantees in the industry, giving our customers that extra reassurance.

What have been the biggest challenges and achievements of Harrod Horticultural so far?

The impact of Covid proved to be a big challenge to us due to the huge demand for gardening equipment, coping with supplier issues and trying to manage customer expectations. The launch of the Southwold Furniture Range has proven to be a challenge yet also one of our greatest achievements. Perfecting the manufacturing process did prove difficult, but once resolved the range has proved to be a real success since launch. We also have a great working relationship with the RHS who endorse a lot of our products and we have won product of the year at the Chelsea Flower Show twice!

What is the creative process like when designing new products?

Innovation is key at Harrod Horticultural, and in 2017 we opened a stunning innovation centre which houses 800 square metres of office and workshop space dedicated to designing, developing and prototyping new products. When designing new products we will look at the key function of the product to make sure it meets the practical application and then look at form to ensure aesthetic appeal. We assess prototypes, review manufacturing methods and determine the materials to be used to ensure we end up with a market leading product for our customers.

What makes Harrod Horticultural different from other similar companies?

With over 65 years of manufacturing expertise, we can ensure that our focus on quality is maintained throughout the entire fabrication process. This gives us the confidence for our products to carry some of the longest guarantees in the industry. We also constantly strive to innovate with new products.

What tips and advice do you have for beginners looking to start a garden?

  1. Start small - Begin with a garden bed or a container garden which allows you to grow a small number of crops which you can tend to generously.
  2. Grow what you like – if you are new to growing your own, then pick fruit and veg that you actually enjoy eating!
  3. Get to know your garden – how shady or light is your garden during the day? This can help you determine the types of plants that will thrive in your outdoor space.
  4. Prepare your soil – knowing your soil can be a great place to start for a thriving garden. Before planting, do a little bit of research on whether organic matter could enrich your soil.
  5. Protect your plants – learning how to best protect your plants can be a life saver!
  6. Enjoy it! Gardening is a fantastic escape from the daily routine and can be really rewarding.

What would be your dream garden project to work on?

It’s really difficult to highlight just one dream garden project. Through the years, we have been lucky enough to have worked with some of the most prestigious clients in the horticultural industry. We’ve worked with the RHS on many of their sites, and helping to support the new Hilltop gardens at RHS Wisley was a real highlight for us. We’ve also had products located at Balmoral which was also an incredible day for the business. We are just hopeful that more opportunities will come our way in the future!
